Abu Dhabi is preparing to unveil one of its most iconic cultural landmarks — the Zayed National Museum, officially opening on 3 December 2025, just a day before UAE National Day. Located at the heart of Saadiyat Cultural District, this national museum is a stunning tribute to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE.
A National Treasure Honoring Sheikh Zayed’s Legacy
Developed by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum will serve as a living institution dedicated to the values Sheikh Zayed embodied — education, sustainability, cultural unity, and progress. The museum narrates the story of the UAE’s transformation from desert lands to a global hub, shaping an immersive experience that celebrates leadership, vision, and heritage.
Architectural Wonder Inspired by Falcon Wings
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the Zayed National Museum’s design is inspired by the wings of a falcon in flight, symbolizing freedom, strength, and Emirati heritage. The museum features five soaring steel towers, each serving as natural air chimneys to promote sustainable cooling — a marvel of green engineering blended with symbolism.
The museum’s layout also includes Al Masar Garden, a 600-meter landscaped outdoor gallery that connects the Louvre Abu Dhabi with the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, featuring native flora, sculptures, falaj irrigation systems, and a timeline tracing Sheikh Zayed’s life.
Immersive Journey Through History and Culture
Visitors will embark on a historical journey through six permanent galleries featuring over 3,000 priceless artifacts, with 1,500 on display at any given time. Each gallery unfolds a unique narrative of the UAE’s past, present, and future:
-
Our Beginning: Chronicles the life and vision of Sheikh Zayed, displaying rare photographs, letters, and artifacts from his personal collection.
-
Through Our Nature: Highlights the UAE’s varied landscapes — from mountains to oases — and how geography shaped Emirati life.
-
To Our Ancestors: Features archaeological finds tracing 300,000 years of human presence, including tools from Jebel Hafeet and models of ancient tombs.
-
Through Our Connections: Explores trade routes, the spread of language, and cultural exchange that connected the Arabian Peninsula to Asia and Africa.
Each exhibit harmonizes historical depth with digital interactivity to offer an engaging visitor experience.
A Cultural Pillar in Saadiyat Island
The Zayed National Museum anchors Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, standing proudly alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, and the upcoming Guggenheim and Natural History Museums. This cluster of global institutions reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in international culture, arts, and innovation.
Symbolism of the Opening Date
The opening date — 3 December 2025 — carries deep symbolism. It precedes UAE National Day (2 December), representing a national gift of pride and remembrance. It signifies a renewal of Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of unity, as the museum opens its doors to the world just as the nation celebrates its foundation.
